Chapter Fourteen

And then there were two…

Alec slowed for traffic as he reached the outskirts of Norfolk that evening. He felt eerily exposed and almost cornered with all the other cars around him, had constantly kept his head on a swivel on the drive down from Richmond earlier. Time was crawling, and it didn’t help that Mark hadn’t been in contact all day.

The meeting time for Blackmore and the widow had come and gone. He should have had news by now. If not from Mark, then from the man Alec had sent to make sure the situation was taken care of one way or the other.

While waiting for the light to change, he flipped through the radio stations and stopped when he came upon a story reporting a shooting near Kitty Hawk. His pulse skipped as he turned the volume up.

“Police are saying this appears to be a targeted shooting, and that the general public is not at risk. According to witnesses, during the ensuing chase after the initial shots were fired, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a telephone pole, and he fled the scene on foot.”

Alec’s hands clenched around the wheel. This had to be about Blackmore and Harper. Were they dead?

“Police are searching the area and no arrests have been made thus far. Both victims were thankfully unharmed, and are cooperating fully with authorities. Anyone with information about this brazen daylight attack is asked to contact local authorities.”

“Fuck,” Alec snarled, and punched his finger into the button to turn it off. So both Mark and the guy Alec had sent as backup had failed.

Not only that, but Craig’s murder had already been reported in Richmond. The cops might not have named a suspect yet, but he would be at the top of their list once they spoke to Bill because of everything that had happened. This failed op in Kitty Hawk only added to the danger. If the backup guy Alec had hired was caught, he might talk.

He exhaled a steadying breath, refusing to let the sudden rise in fear take hold. The cops wouldn’t be able to locate Craig’s murder weapon at least. Alec had chucked it into the middle of a large pond several miles from the site and driven around for a while to ensure he wasn’t being followed before heading down here to the OBX.

Now he had another problem. He wasn’t comfortable heading for the Mexican border until Blackmore was dead. Because if that guy wasn’t taken out of the equation, he would hunt Alec down eventually.

He had an escape plan in place, funds set aside for the new life waiting for him, and plane tickets sent to his mom and sister so he could meet them in Mexico. But had to be sure about Blackmore first.

He also needed food and at least four to six hours of solid sleep. He was so desperate for it his whole body ached. But there would be no rest until he could confirm whether Blackmore was dead.

The damn light was still red.
